General Solubility Principles

Solubility is governed by the principle of "like dissolves like." This means that polar solvents tend to dissolve polar substances, and non – polar solvents dissolve non – polar substances. Organic solvents can be classified as either polar or non – polar. Polar organic solvents include alcohols (such as ethanol), acetone, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Non – polar organic solvents include hexane, toluene, and benzene.

Since it does not dissolve in the organic polymers (which can be considered as a type of non – polar or weakly polar organic medium), it can enhance the mechanical properties of the composites, such as increasing strength and stiffness.
  • Coatings: In organic – based coatings, silica powder can be added to improve the scratch resistance and durability. Its non – solubility ensures that it remains dispersed in the coating matrix and performs its intended function.
